As the wilderness concept is gradually translated, adapted, and makes its way throughout the world, Namibia will likely be one of the next countries to adopt national legislation to specifically protect and manage wilderness. Much of the lead-up and background work to this has been fostered and encouraged by a WILD associate, Tryg Cooper (Chief Warden, Waterberg Plateau Park, Ministry of Environment and Tourism). In June 1996, an international gathering of wilderness experts convened at the Waterberg Plateau Park to assist Namibia's national progress towards wilderness legislation. Professionals from every country in southern Africa, Europe, the United States, Australia, met in a mini World Wilderness Congress. Their information, findings and recommendations are in included in this handsome, well-produced, amply illustrated volume, which will become a benchmark in African wilderness conservation.
