WILD 9 -- Feel, Think, Act - is
the 9th World Wilderness Congress (WWC), and it will convene
in Mexico in November, 2009. The exact date and venue will
be announced in January 2008. It is a project of The WILD
Foundation,
Unidos para la Conservacion, and many collaborating
organizations, institutions and government agencies from
Latin America and around the world.

The WWC is the longest-running, public international
environmental forum. It is a conservation project that
creates coalitions, establishes timelines, sets objectives
and achieves practical outcomes. Established in 1977, it has
convened on eight occasions in 30 years to review progress,
debate issues, announce results and celebrate the importance
and vitality of wild nature.
In February 2007, a small group met to begin planning the
next Congress. As always, we had our experts in the
wilderness field and our staff, but this time we also had a
few advertising and internet strategy folks helping us out.
After all, it is increasingly a new and different world in
communications . . . we need to increase the relevance and
outreach of the wilderness message, and continue to innovate
and implement conservation solutions. After a very spirited
discussion, we agreed on some new elements, new strategy,
and a new name - WILD 9: The 9th World Wilderness Congress.
In part, the new name came as a result of translation
issues. “Wilderness” does not translate well into Spanish,
and our next location will be in Latin America. The new
title allows us to transcend language barriers -WILD 9 can
be used without translation. Also important, we wanted a new
look and feel that would tell the story of thisdifferent and
effective process to an even wider group of stakeholders and
participants.
WILD 9 will include everything that has always made the
Congress such a powerful process. It will be a forum for the
best and brightest in policy, research and practice. It will
continue to bring together diverse stakeholders from
science, business, politics, native communities, the arts
and more, in a single forum with powerful platforms for
dialogue, innovation and results.
As always, the WWC grows and adapts. WILD 9 continues this
tradition, and builds strongly on the 8th WWC in Alaska. We
will create a permanent online platform that can launch a
year before WILD 9 convenes, and that will continue
afterwards to facilitate the practical outcomes, networking,
ideas and sharing that are so vital to the future of wild
nature.
More than ever, this Congress is about you, -your ideas,
dreams and knowledge. The more you share with us, the more
we can support you.
