In Response to “National Wilderness Month”

October 5,2011 by GuestBlogger

Emily Loose’s blog about September being National Wilderness Month reminded me of the last time my husband and I went to our “secret” fishing spot in Wyoming and what we found when we arrived at our favorite camp site by the river… One can only imagine the horror I felt as we pulled our truck down the barely visible entrance to our campsite as the endless amounts of trash previous campers had left came into view. (The pictures do not do it justice!!!) I slowly got out of the truck and saw dirty diapers, socks, underwear, a pit full of more ... Read More

“Between the Harvest”

May 27,2011 by GuestBlogger
The following is a guest post from Scott Drucker, member of the "Between the Harvest" team. "Between the Harvest" is the story of Ostional, a small coastal town that relies on a legal harvest of olive ridley sea turtle eggs. Told through the eyes of these two fragile species, this short documentary delves into one of the biggest controversies in the marine world: is this harvest an exemplary conservation project? The aim of the film is to create a discussion about conservation, think about the legality of such a project, and to expose the threats that exist to the Olive Ridley ... Read More

How Wild Nature Provides Seed Diversity

As the world's population exponentially explodes, demand for additional living space and resources for survival greatly increase. To supply this demand, we compromise the integrity and survival of the natural world and existing ecosystems around us. As a result, the earth and wild nature bears the weight and suffers the most damage in order to make way for its human counterparts. Tropical rainforests are demolished, natural plant and animal ecosystems are threatened, and the quality of the atmosphere steadily depreciates. And as we continue to degrade the health of the world around us, we come dangerously ... Read More

Thinking About Wilderness

March 12,2010 by GuestBlogger
The following is a guest post by Michael Tobias, Executive Director of the Dancing Star Foundation. There was a time when people gave no thought to wilderness; when our connection to the natural world was a guaranteed issue of food, shelter and avoidance of pain. Given the 120,000 odd years of our position in the global coordination of species and the toll of our behavior, we have come a long ways, to be sure, from that innocent past, as we approach the staggering 7 billion number of individuals. Typically, such numeric prodigiousness would be construed as a biological success, but we ... Read More
