More Climate Change Maps: This Time Europe

May 23,2007 by mikelatarlow
You have to see it to get the impact, but London is like Portugal, Oslo is close to the climate of Madrid and Barcelona is equivalent to North Africa. http://environment.guardian.co.uk/flash/page/0,,2079347,00.htmlto view the article http://environment.guardian.co.uk/climatechange/story/0,,2079750,00.html Tags: Communication & media, Climate Mapping, Climate Change, Media Tools Read More

What’s with the Bees

May 23,2007 by mikelatarlow

Its called Colony Collapse Disorder, (CCD) and this mysterious disappearance of bees is reaching epidemic proportions around the globe.  When the US Congress schedules a 2- day hearing on the topic, you know it’s got people worried. It’s now affecting more that 25% of the total US bee population, and up to 70% in some states and similar numbers being reported around the world. The current cause is still not clear, but theories abound.  They have included cell phone signals, genetically modified crops, inbreeding, unnatural conditions for raising bee colonies, new pesticides, climate change, etc. Almost every feature of commercial farming today, plus ... 2 paradigms for border protection

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow

The US and Mexico have come up with solutions for border protection that are diametrically opposed. One offers benefits for the people and the environment and one takes them away. See if you can guess which country is on the smart side of this issue.Paradigm number 1: The Department of Homeland Security has fast tracked a border fence to be built on land that is currently designated as a Wildlife Refuge. Bulldozing is slated to begin next year. This includes 70,000 acres on the Rio Grande Valley, 30 % of it shoreline. It is a bird and butterfly sanctuary and home to ... Read More

Murdoch going green.

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow
At a company wide webcast held the morning of May 9, Murdoch pledged to reduce the company’s greenhouse emissions.   But perhaps more significantly, he vowed to include content messaging and programs into News Corp’s many holdings. Murdock said "The challenge is to revolutionize the [climate change] message….make it dramatic, make it vivid, even sometimes make it fun. We want to inspire people to change their behavior."  He went on to say "Our audience's carbon footprint is 10,000 times bigger than ours ... Imagine if we succeed in inspiring our audiences to reduce their own impacts on climate change by just 1 ... Read More

CarbonTracker: A Climate Change Breakthrough

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow

NOAA/ESRL Global Monitoring Division has announced what appears to be a breakthrough in Climate Change and greenhouse gas interactions. The breakthrough is CarbonTracker, a new tool created by the Global Monitoring Division for monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2) content in the atmosphere that estimates the carbon dioxide exchange from an "atmospheric point of view" by calculating carbon dioxide uptake and release at the Earth's surface over time. http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/carbontracker/overview.html   “A simple analogy for this approach is your monthly check-book: by looking at your bank statement you know exactly how much money you have in your account on the 1st day of a new month. ... The enemy is us

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow
On May 9, top military brass told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that climate change is major threat to US security and will exacerbate instability throughout the world. This warning comes on the heels of a new Pentagon commissioned report that says the US military's energy policy is unsustainable from an economic perspective. If you put 2 and 2 together, the Pentagon is acknowledging that climate change threatens US security and that current military energy policies are contributing to climate change, thus our military is contributing to instability. The Boston Globe goes on to report http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2007/05/01/pentagon_study_says_oil_reliance_strains_military/ "The study, produced by a defense ... Read More

Nowhere to hide when you use Real Costs

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow

Michael Mandiberg has just launched Real Costs, "Think of it as nutritional labeling for emissions." It's a firefox plug in that inserts emissions data into travel related e-commerce web sites. Currently it works for airfare sites. Upcoming versions will be available for car rentals, shipping, etc. Here's what it look like for a Continental Airline airfare request: Download it for free at http://therealcosts.com/ And don't leave home without it. Newsflash: The US is shutting down 80 coal fired plants!!!!!

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow
Another 190 are begin shut down around the world !!!!!!!!!!! Well not exactly, or should I say not quite yet. But this could happen if everyone merely switched from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs. Australia will phase them out by 2010. Canada will phase them out by 2012. And New Zealand is about to follow suit. Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is pushing for California to phase them out by 2010. The EU, now 27 countries, announced it will cut carbon emissions by 2020 and a key part of their plan is replacing incandescent bulbs. Moscow and India have big pushes underway. Philips, the world's ... Read More

Two birds with one stone: buy local bulbs

May 22,2007 by mikelatarlow
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, buy a product made closer to home, thus reducing shipping costs. When the EU began supporting compact fluorescents, they stipulated they had to be made in an EU country. Not so in the US. Most compacts are made in China.Visit http://screwthatbulb.org/ to learn more about the issue. But check the labeling. All manufactured products are required to have a country of origin label. Sometimes the label is on the package/ sometimes on the bulb. Buy compact AND buy local for maximum carbon reduction impact. And you'll support a local job while you are ... Read More
