Philanthropiece – Piecing together a better world

July 13,2010 by Emily Loose

Last week I had the great honor of hosting Katie Doyle Myers (Director of Programs) and two very bright interns from Philanthropiece for lunch at WILD.  (I shouldn’t actually say “hosting,” because they brought lunch – sushi, yum!)  It was a great opportunity to learn more about the important projects and programs this Boulder-based operating foundation and get to know two emerging leaders.

Originally started at the Wild Oats Community Foundation in 1997, Philanthropiece works with communities in North and Central America on community development and sustainable lifestyle programs.   Like WILD, Philanthropiece works in partnership a lot and all of the community programs are locally defined.   While WILD’s work focuses on wilderness and wild-nature, Philanthropiece works on health, education, business and economic opportunities, quality of life and environmental issues.

We had a great conversation about Carrie and Christine’s internship work with Philanthropiece, studying , reviewing and making suggestions for best practices in food production, community garden and agriculture projects.  I was impressed with their thorough knowledge on the topic and their enthusiasm for the work they are doing!

This great 5 minute video talks about Philanthropiece’s work in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja, Mexico.  Watch it to learn more!
