Prince Charles Calls for Action on Deforestation

May 7,2009 by Emily Loose

Yesterday, Britan’s Prince Charles launched an internet campaign to raise awareness about deforestation.  In this short video clip, international personalities (Dalai Lama, Pele, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and others) as well as the Prince and his sons William and Henry, appear along side of a large, computer generated frog.  Each individual makes a clear statement in support of protecting our world’s forests to address climate change.   Thought to be the first time any senior royalty has used online social networking tools, this video calls for an online community to support and protect the Earth’s rainforests.    Individuals can join the campaign and create their own version of the film - appearing alongside the stars and the frog!

We now know that protecting rainforests and all wildlands is a crucial piece of addressing global climate change.  Nearly 20% of all carbon emmission is directly related to the distrubance and distruction of wild-nature.  The Prince’s video conveys this message quickly, and brings this concept into the “mainstream.”  It sets a precedent for leaders in our world to both speak up about climate change and deforestation and to use new tools, such as online social media, to get the message out and create a movement.
