Comments from John Heaton:
Guatemala: please help conserve the Mirador Basin as a wilderness area.
In the past 30 years one could hardly miss the presence of hundreds NGO's and advocates of conservation bustling the four corners of Guatemala to fulfill their agendas. Three decades later, save for isolated pockets of the country, the results have been as good as nil.
Only few areas have been spared, those where dedicated and passionate individuals like Dr. Richard Hansen have thwarted what in most parts of Guatemala has been the inevitable.
The depredation of the inherent beauty in this country is mind boggling and deeply disturbing. Guatemala's highland vernacular architecture, rivers, lakes, rain forests, and wetlands, including trashed littered roads, all has been treated with such disrespect it is difficult to comprehend. But mostly, it is disturbing to think that in the last quarter century hundreds if not thousands of NGO's were active in Guatemala with their "save the world" agendas, and that most of the environmental and cultural depredation happened under their watch. By the sad state of affairs, it looks like the Sphynx's have failed and have ended up abusing the trust and the generous pockets of goodwill.
To think that in 1988, Bill Garrett, the then editor of National Geographic and for the past 17 years, liked to consider Guatemala among his top three picks as the most culturally rich and environmentally pristine countries he knew in the world.
What happened?

Quo Vadis?
When observing the amount of bees buzzing around the Mirador Basin honeycomb, and listening to the hum of the multitude of scenarios that might befall this mystical archaeological site, one can only think what the conversations must have been like between Walt Disney, Ollie Johnson and the Evan brothers when conceptualizing Disneyland. The excess buzz coming from some of these busy but not necessarily working bees, is spilling El Mirador 's nectar and risks turning its magical aura into common place. In shorter terms; too many cooks might be spoiling the broth.

Food for thought...
Let us pray that the Mirador Basin, its archaeological site and pristine biodiversity may be protected to survive as the heart and pulse of the Mundo Maya, and as a resilient pocket of wilderness to inspire the world at large with the notion that there is still an impenetrable bastion of the Mayan world that remains authentic in its mystique and in its presentation.
In these days of globalization and mass tourism, too many archaeological sites around the world have surrendered their authenticity to the status of the mediocre theme park culture, and their endemic mystique has vanished for the sake of greed and profit.
Why would El Mirador be successful in its tourism ambitions when extraordinary Maya sites such as, Tikal, Yaxja, Nakum, Uaxactun, that are readily accessible for eco-cultural tourism have been left on the wayside and their meaningful potential remains untapped and the infrastructure is mediocre at best? Why not harness the full tourism potential of these accessible sites to benefit their surrounding communities, before meandering in the remote wilderness in search of a new tourism development opportunity at the expense of El Mirador's cultural aura and its invaluable biodiversity?
The Mirador needs to be treated, like once upon a time, the Galapagos islands. Establish a yearly quota of visitors, raise the value of the experience, lower the environmental impact while promoting its aura and mystique. No rocket science! Just a dose of common sense and a just measure to the vision. El Mirador should remain a rare experience, not be turned into a common place tourist destination.

The mystique and aura of the Mirador Basin are the key ingredients that should be nurtured to inspire the present and the future generations to the great adventures and unique experience the Mundo Maya has to offer - By preserving the integrity of this extraordinary site, Guatemala would retain and contribute to the world a rare and invaluable gift, rather than risking it for the uncertain.
Today, the priority should be to deal with the tsunami of endemic problems that is haunting Guatemala, many of them to be addressed urgently. The ambitions of turning el Mirador in to a stellar tourism destination is not only bordering on utopia, it is a Pandora's box that risks ruining it all, and an affront to the pressing needs of the Guatemalan people. If those needs are not urgently addressed as a priority, such projects as El Mirador could soon become irrelevant.
Let us preserve the Mirador Basin as a world class wilderness preserve, an inspiring archaeological mission and observation station.
The Mirador Basin must continue being what it is best; the cradle and mystery of the maya civilization.

This resolution presents a unique opportunity to preserve one of the last large wild areas in middle America. It is unique in that it is an entirely intact ecosystem with all of the endemic species still in place, and with sufficient habitat to sustain them in perpetuity. It also has the added benefit of containing an archaeological resource of unparalleled integrity, value and potential. This cultural resource - the cradle of Maya civilization - offers the potential for this natural area to be economically sustainable without the need to develop its natural resources. However, the area is threatened on all sides, the main mechanism for negative change being road building. Wilderness designation and management will insure preservation. I wholeheartedly support this resolution.

Let us pray that the Mirador Basin archaeological site and its pristine environment may be protected to survive as the heart and pulse of the Mundo Maya, and as a resilient pocket of wilderness to inspire the world at large with the notion that there is still an impenetrable bastion of the Mayan world that remains authentic in its mystique and in its presentation.

The Mayan biosphere, is one of the last remaining large wild land areas in Central America. It is a refuge of many species. So, the combination of the tropical forest environment and Maya history and culture provide a unique area, which should be conserved and promoted for all of us in order to protect our world heritage. As Guatemalan, I support this important and necessary resolution.

Establishment and effective management of a roadless wilderness preserve will be a magnificant gift to the people of Guatemala and Mexico. There are few opportunities like this left on our continent. Bravo, Dr. Hansen and your far-sighted collaborators!
