The International League of Conservation Writers is a forum to bring writers together from all over the world who are writing to promote wilderness, nature, conservation, and other means to protect and restore the natural areas, habitats, animals, and plants of our planet. ILCW will present periodic writing awards to authors who excel in this field. Formed at WILD9, the 9th World Wilderness Congress (Merida, Mexico 6-13 November 2009) during the Writer's Seminars, the ILCW has a growing list of founding fellow and members.  There are 3 levels for membership: Read More

Eco-Leads

February 19,2010 by Emily Loose

[caption id="attachment_9813" align="alignleft" width="198" caption="Morgan at WildSpeak at WILD9"][/caption] Inspired by her work as a photo-journalist and by her blog (The Nature Files), Morgan Heim, a great friend of WILD and an Emerging League member of the International League of Conservation Photographers, has just launched a great new newsletter.  Eco-Leads (the newsletter) can serve as news source, but is primarily aimed at inspiring photography projects around the globe. What I like most about this project is that it promotes collaboration and sharing of information.  If we're going to create positive change, we have to work together, and I think that Eco-Leads is ... AnimalsandEarth

January 22,2010 by Emily Loose

While I was at WILD9, I had a few opportunities to wander around and learn from fellow delegates and booths at the Expo hall. One day, I stopped in at a booth that was recommended to me – AnimalsandEarth. It’s a pretty cool idea – AnimalsandEarth provides nature photos for personal, non-commercial use in social networks, blogs & websites. Read More

International League of Conservation Writers

January 18,2010 by Emily Loose

One of the many outcomes from WILD9, the 9th World Wilderness Congress (6-13 November 2009, Merida, Mexico), was the formation of the International League of Conservation Writers.  A development of the 3-day Writers Seminar Series, an esteemed group of environmental writers have joined together.  Thus far, the group is a loose collection of environmental writers, with the 'hub' of the group at Fulcrum Publishing in Golden, Colorado.  The group aspires to provide mentorship for up-and-coming writers, provide camaraderie among top wilderness writers and recognize the importance of writing within the conservation movement.  Within the next few months, they will post ... Can We Stop Trying to Control Nature?

January 13,2010 by Emily Loose

[caption id="attachment_9116" align="aligncenter" width="353" caption="Author James M. Glover"][/caption] This post is an excerpt from an article from the International Journal of Wilderness (April 2000, vol.6 no.1 ) by James M. Glover.  I think you will enjoy his insight into what it means to control nature, and if indeed we can protect land without controlling nature. Scientists in particular are uncomfortable with the wilderness idea because it seems so subjective, soft, and nonquantifiable. —Reed Noss Read More

January 12,2010 by Emily Loose

I just got an email from Ann Zavadskaya, who I met at WILD9 through the WILD9 Young Professionals Program, about the first Russian movie on sea kayaking.  It's a non-commercial movie, so it can be seen online and downloaded by anyone who's interested!  Right now, you can watch the trailer and see some great pics of their adventure, and following the Festival of Kayaking VideoFest in Riga the full length movie will be available for download on the SALT website, which has more information about the project.
