About the Mali Elephants (French)

This is a 3 minute TV programme that was made by one of our collaborators in Mali, the Malian Association for the Conservation of Wildlife and the Environment (AMCFE) as a part of our outreach programme funded by USFWS. It was shown before the main 8pm news that is watched by most of the urban population and aims to inform Malians about the importance of these elephants nationally, regionally and internationally, and that constitute part of Mali’s national heritage. It also speaks of the threat to their environment and what can be done about it. This kind of information is rare in Mali and AMCFE have received many calls from people fascinated and astonished that elephants still exist in their own country. (Video produced by AMCFE). Roots & Shoots Caribbean Regional Coordinator Rick Asselta led a workshop on Sunday 8 November on The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program. The program involves almost 150,000 young people in 110 countries.

Through Roots & Shoots, young people from pre‐school through college work together to identify issues in their communities and take action through service projects, youth‐led campaigns and an interactive website.

The Roots & Shoots Workshop at WILD9 demonstrated this program’s effective model for involving young people in efforts to save our planet.

World Wilderness Congress Overview

What is the World Wilderness Congress (WWC)? Much more than just a conference or meeting, it is ongoing conservation project, focused on practical outcomes in policy, new wilderness areas, new funding mechanisms, trainings for communities and professionals, and more.

The WWC is the world longest running public environmental forum. Now having convened nine times since its inaugural meeting in 1977 (South Africa), the WWC has a long list of practical outcomes as well as countless stories from individuals who were impacted by the Congress.

These interview, filmed at WILD9 the 9th World Wilderness Congress, give insight into the diverse group of participants and topics of the WWC.

On Saturday 7 November 2009, representatives of Canada, Mexico and the United States signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for Wilderness Conservation, initiated and facilitated by WILD. Officially announced by Mexican President Felipe Calderon during the WILD9 Opening Ceremony (6 November), this is the first formal agreement between countries on wilderness conservation.
