Phase II - Outreach and Action

Using the knowledge gained in Phase I of the Mali Elephant Project (Research and Understanding), we are now in Phase II – Outreach and Action. Our team is implementing a set of strategies to target the key threats.   Outreach activities include workshops and dissemination of information to groups within the elephant range.   The aim of these outreach activities is to build consensus within Mali on the need to secure the future for the elephants and to provide the information needed to reach that consensus.
We are working directly with several key stakeholder groups:

  • national and regional decision-makers
  • projects and programmes (government, bilateral, NGO) working in the Gourma;
  • local communities and their representatives, including school children and teachers; and
  • tourism operators, guides, tourists and visitors.

And specific outreach and communications tools have been developed for these groups:

  1. General information brochure, used for tourists and tourism operators
  2. Tourist Code of Conduct brochure
  3. Local community brochures, in four languages. See the Dogon and English brochures.
  4. Environmental Education materials – the first of its kind in Mali, includes teachers guide in French plus 6 posters, all laminated for durable use (see below).

A primary result of Phase II is a full report on Lake Banzena:

  • Study on the liberation from human and livestock pressure of Lake Banzena in the Gourma of Mali (ENGLISH)
  • Etude pour la liberation de la pression humaine et pastorale de la mare de Banzena dans le Gourma au Mali (FRENCH)
