President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon officially opened WILD9, the 9th World Wilderness Congress (Merida, Mexico) on 6 November 2009, with a speech on Mexico’s commitments to nature and wilderness. In this speech, the President announced the groundbreaking multi-national cooperation with Canada and U.S. on wilderness conservation and formally used the newly defined Spanish term for ‘wilderness’ – Tierras Silvestres.
